Happy Holidays!!

So, it has been a while since I last updated you, oh lace-loving-blog of mine. My excuses are the general 'getting caught up in life' sort. I have been tirelessly applying for jobs and trying to keep my spirits up. I have also been sewing costumes for different ballets and altering vintage dresses for myself and a boutique. I am also starting to ponder what my next move will be in 2012 and the direction I shall head in. For now here are some pretty textiles courtesy of India Flint.

Beads & Dreams

From a very interesting article about a couture beading house in Paris.
Can you even imagine? So many wonderful beads to choose from!

                                           Paolo Roversi is amazing.

60s feeling

I'm starting to revert back to being inspired by the 1960s. I used to be so obsessed with pop art, the 1960s and Edie Sedgwick. Now I am obsessed with the lovely elegance of Catherine Deneuve circa "The Umbrellas of Cherbourg" and "The Young Girls of Rochefort." Clean lines, bright colors, feminine whimsy.

Jazz Age Lawn Party

Every year on Governor's Island there is a 1920s jazz age lawn party. It is like a dream come true! I designed and made my own dress for the occasion.
With my lovely friends Melody (middle, made her own dress as well, so lovely!) and Cat.
If anyone ever needs a sweet 1920s summer dress ; )

Another Adventure to Dead Horse Bay

This up-rooted tree was full of old stockings and other antiquarian
fabric delights, mangled and softened by the sea.

Glass hair brush....or as my lovely friend said, 'mermaid's
                                     abandoned hair brush'
.....And the tide comes in to hide all the bottles once again

Moving Apartments! Good Bye Washington Heights!

Well, dear blog, I am going to be moving apartments in the next week. (current apartment in Washington Heights had a bit of a flood and now moving to Morningside Heights/Upper West Side....doesn't the name Morningside Heights sound oh so much more pleasant??) I will be living right by this gorgeous cathedral and interesting statue. I will also be living by the sweetest Hungarian Pastry Shop! More pictures to come very soon. It will be so dream filled and pleasant to live in an area I like!!

THING I WON'T MISS ABOUT WASHINGTON HEIGHTS:

- People constantly sitting outside the apartment/on the door step/ holding the door handle from the outside and not moving as I knock to please let me out the door.

- The risk of small children running me over with razor scooters, throwing a ball at my head, having their dog nip at me and the BEST of all no more risk of being wacked by a 3 year old with a base ball bat. (he got mighty close, I actually cringed)

- Overpriced grocery stores with horrible rotten produce. $5 for honey or a box of crackers you say? My word!

- The cat calls and offers of bananas by interesting men, mainly old, right outside my door

- The woman downstairs who chain smokes in the hallway and is always screaming at her child who matches her volume in screaming back.

- The mystery bugs I constantly find in the apartment and can't seem to identify. I believe I killed a hybrid cockroach/spider last night. And I am pretty sure there are mutant flies running around as well.

THINGS I WILL MISS ABOUT WASHINGTON HEIGHTS:

- The Japanese restaurant by the subway, such awesome sushi

- The very nice wine store (columbia wines) on the corner. Oh how I love that place and I am pretty sure they got to know my face pretty well over this past year

GOOD BYE to the past and I am so looking forward to the exciting future in Morningside Heights, being surrounded by two parks, cute cafes, and cathedrals!!!

Bosom Friends & Victorian Lace

I have started reading the 'Anne of Green Gables' novels. I grew up watching the films and never thought to read the books. I am enjoying getting lost in L.M. Montgomery's dreamy wordings and imagining what Prince Edward Island in the early 1900s would look like in the spring.

The movie is still wonderful to watch. Last I watched it
was with my bosom friend, sipping mimosas on a warm New York city summer day.

In realities, I am working on a wedding dress from 1872 that started off looking like this.
It needed to be let out in the sides and at the waistband. She also was not so happy with the cut of the waist. So I have been working and am now at this point.....Starting on the finalized peplum. (I re-designed the bodice to include the original shape with a modern touch)
The lace in itself is gorgeous.
Suits mood and current thoughts

Things that makes me like NYC.....

-Going to the premier of Miranda July's new movie "The Future" at the NYMOMA and hearing her speak. AMAZING.
-Good friends....adventures in the city with my friend Cat....fun times celebrating her birthday last night in Brooklyn. (this picture is from her birthday last year)
-Dreaming of 'the day I get a job and what I will do when that day finally occurs'
(my own apartment in Brooklyn or Queens)

-Days when I realize how lucky I am to be here and the cool opportunities and activities I have gotten to do.

The Secret Garden

For some reason today I was thinking about being younger and reading 'The Secret Garden'. I was so enchanted by the image of the woman on the swing in the garden that would pop into my head. It seemed so magical and romantic....even back then I was drawn to the pretty, lacey and floral. Wishing everyone a positive and fanciful week.

I want to lay my head down in a field of flowers and sleep and sleep only to wake up and find out this had all been a harsh dream.
